Joan Namahana Kerr is the Executive Director of SBC's Supplier
Diversity Programs. Joining Pacific Bell in 1985, Joan served as legal counsel to Pacific Bell's marketing
and procurement organizations for many years. She received a J.D. from the University of California at Davis,
a M.S.W. (Master of Social Work) from the University of Washington and a B.S. in Comparative Religions and in
Psychology from the University of California at Santa Cruz.
Ms. Kerr has played a key role in
the success of SBC's Supplier Diversity Programs. Under her leadership, SBC received the Ron Brown Award
in 2002 for its supplier diversity programs. This is the only Presidential award given for economic development
achievement. The company has been recognized as "Corporation of the Year" by the National Minority Supplier
Development Council (NMSDC), NAACP, U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, U.S. Department of Labor, Northern
California Supplier Development Council, Association for Service Disabled Veterans and many others. The
California DVBE Alliance has honored SBC with its National Patriot Award and John K. Lopez Award.
In 2003
SBC was ranked number one in supplier diversity on DiversityInc.com's Top 50 Companies for Diversity. SBC
was also named again as one of the top companies in Fortune Magazine's "Best Companies for Minorities".
SBC received " America's Top Corporations for Women's Business Enterprises" award from the Women's
Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) this year as well.
Ms. Kerr serves as Chair of the
Board of WBENC and makes numerous presentations to supplier diversity advocacy groups and supplier
diversity organizations throughout the country. This year, MBE Magazine published a two-part series
written by Ms. Kerr on "Maintaining Velocity in Supplier Diversity". Joan's leadership in supplier
diversity has also been recognized through her receipt of the California DVBE Alliance's "Keeping the
Promise Award and the NMSDC's "MBE Corporate Coordinator of the Year" award in 1999 and again in 2002.
Asians for Corporate and Community Action, an SBC employee organization, honored Ms. Kerr with their
Corporate Leadership Award in 2003. |
